Hot tar and shingle laid by hand 3 - Norwich

Tar and Shingle Surface Dressings

Hot tar and shingle surfacing is a lower cost alternative surfacing finish than using tarmac or block paving. Once there is a firm foundation, the hot liquid tar is sprayed over the foundation of the surface. The stone shingle is then laid on top of the hot tar and rolled in with a rubber roller. The rubber roller is an essential part of job, as this does not break the stone when being rolled into the hot tar.

Hot tar and shingle dressings can be used in a range of situations. Going from small drives which can be hand laid, all the way up to commercial car parks which can
be done with a combination sprayer plant that we have available.

Advantages of using hot tar and shingle surface dressing are:

Simple and easy to construct

The hot tar and shingle surface dressing can be laid on top of multiple different foundations that may already be in place. These include: tarmac, concrete, brick weave, road planings or hardcore surfaces. The hot liquid tar is sprayed over the foundation of the surface, once sprayed the stone is then rolled in.

Different colours of stone

Another advantage of having a hot tar and shingle surface dressings is the ability to chose different coloured stones. This allows for more customisation and personalisation of the surface you would like to dress.

Low maintenance cost

A final advantage of using hot tar and shingle to dress an area is the low maintenance costs. As the shingle is rolled into the hot tar, this prevents them from coming lose. This benefit will require regular sweeps of lose gravel.

Cost efficient

Hot tar and shingle drives are a lower cost alternative to having the whole area asphalted or block paved. This is due to only hot tar being sprayed with natural stone being rolled into the hot tar. This is a great alternative when budgets can be tight.
